Community Health Planning

Community Health Boards are in the process of developing their 2025-2029 Plan!

Community Health Boards (CHBs) across the province have asked what communities need to promote better health and well-being for everyone. They are currently reviewing what was heard to set their priorities for the next five years. Nova Scotia Health’s 35 volunteer Community Health Boards (CHBs) are currently working toward the development of a new 2025 to 2029 Community Health Plan.

The most essential phase of developing the Community Health Plan is citizen engagement around the social and economic determinants of health.  CHBs take a population health approach to listening to Nova Scotians about what can help us all to remain healthy in our communities.  Through November to early February, CHBs have been engaging with Nova Scotians thorough various methods on topics related to poverty, food security, housing, active living, and social connection as they relate to health and wellness.

 Summary of Engagements:

  • At least 150 in-person engagement sessions were held in communities across the province.

  • The total recorded in person attendance recorded was 2,391 Nova Scotians so far.

    • Note that attendance was not captured at a many of the sessions, so 2,391 is the minimum number.

  • Comment cards were provided at community events, or with ballot boxes were at numerous other community locations and, to date, nearly 1,700 comment cards have been received from individuals from across Nova Scotia.

  • In addition, our online survey on the Engage4Health platform captured input from at least 2,652 individuals from across Nova Scotia, with a high rate of engagement from site visitors and extensive commentary.

  • In all, we have received input on the five themes presented, and more, from at least 6,700 Nova Scotians!

Community health planning is an ongoing activity for the CHBs.

CHBs gather your ideas and share information about how to improve and promote health & wellness close to home. They focus on the many factors that affect health & wellness in our communities, including income, education and sense of belonging, among others. CHBs then share what they have learned about your health & wellness priorities with Nova Scotia Health Authority, IWK Health Centre, and community groups.

Provincial CHB Conference

For the first time since 2018, the 35 Community Health Boards in NS gathered for a provincial conference November 17 & 18 in Dartmouth, NS. The theme was Building Healthy Communities Together: Collaborating for a Healthier Tomorrow. It was a great opportunity for learning, sharing, reconnecting, and planning for our ongoing work to build healthier communities. The image is a dynamic visual representation of the content of the entire day.

Sommet provincial des CCS

Tous les deux ans, les membres des CCS sont invités à assister à un sommet provincial des CCS.  Le sommet inclus une vitrine du travail que les CCS font en communauté basé sur leur plan se santé communautaire.
