Meet Heather

I’m originally from Newfoundland, but moved to Annapolis Valley a few years ago with my husband, two dogs, and two cats.  I had been working in public health before starting a Masters in Social Work at Dal.  In my free time I enjoy volunteering, gardening, hiking, and exploring Nova Scotia.

I think the most amazing part of volunteering [with the Community Health Board] is that it pushed me to make a career change because I enjoy what we do so much.  I love public health, but the Board spends more time on social and structural determinants of health and community initiatives.  I’m hoping I can focus more on these areas post- graduation and maybe even look into local research opportunities.  There have been so many great learning opportunities with the Community Health Board!

Having been a public health officer, [my interests within the Western Zone Community Health Plan] lean towards issues related to food and housing security.  CHBs in Annapolis Valley recently formed a group looking at housing issues and I would say that is my priority area right now.
